The US Government Shutdown

Meh, we've been through this story before. Anti-government party wants to shut down the government. Minimal governance party does as little as possible to dissuade the anti-government party.

Governance by Committee as the US does is mainly about the optics. The day to day stuff will probably just keep on doing by itself but big budgets, which need Congressional approval will probably just halt in place. Sometimes, they'll probably have to be restarted at a later date.

Competent government could just bypass this sort of stunt but Democrats think it makes good political theatre and have no interest in stopping. Republicans think their voters just eat this sort of stuff up. However, it's all just theatre. But parties have their leaders mainly interested in the same things but it's all about the optics for them.

Not too much to comment. Business in the USA and by extension Canada is bad right now. Probably for a generation. We really do need a generational plan to get us out of this mess. A ten to twenty year program, unfortunately. Placing pieces onto the board and moving them where they need to be to make things work again. By pieces, I mean people. We need good strong policies to implement as well. There's a lot to think about.

The way forward

I've been a in deep, deep depression these past couple years. I'm naturally manic-depressive, but I've also been genuinely sad, without an inkling of what I've needed to do in my personal life. I've been lost, and I've lost some friends. Well, I'm still lost, but I'm emerging from my sadness. I've taken a lot of time to think whilst in my funk. I'd been thinking, "How do we extricate ourselves out of this mess we've placed ourselves? What is the way forward?" I've found no answer. There's no clear path forward. There's no strategy, no long term plan that can really account for every possible setback that will occur. I suppose that's true of all plans, though. "Plans are worthless, but planning is everything." The solution then, I guess, is we need to wing it. Improvise. Get tough, and push forward. Suffer the pains from the blows we will receive, without flinching. Start moving forward to a place we wan...

Carney speaks after capitulating to Trump's demands

Dunno how else it can be explained other than capitulation. Carney, you weren't elected to kowtow to Trump. You were elected to stand up to him. Canadians may even start to get buyers remorse for ditching Trudeau for you when he showed far more backbone than this. At least he cared more about Canadian sovereignty than this act. What exactly have you extracted for this? What benefit did this provide for Canadians compared to the billions in revenue Canada stood to gain from the Digital Services Tax as well as protecting Canada's ability to create its own taxes?
